''She's dead.''
The single whisper made the tiny silver colored tom blink open his eyes. They were pale, almost like his father's, but different. He yawned, and pressed closer to the pelt he knew was his mother. Something wasn't right. Her pelt was cold. Very cold. ''Mama?'' The newborn kit squeaked. ''Mama, do you want more moss?'' One cat glanced at him, then whispered to another cat. ''We have to take him outside.'' Then he bent down and scooped up the tiny kitten. He wriggled. ''She... she named him Goose.'' The kind she-cat who smelled of herbs blinked sadly. ''Goosekit. Goosekit it is, then.'' Goosekit pawed at the cat who was holding him. ''Put me down! I gotta go to Mama, she's cold and needs more moss'' He was placed down on the ground, very gently. ''Goosekit, it's OK little one.'' The tom cat whispered, giving him a lick over the ear.
Goosekit watched as the tom turned to peer at the nursery again, his ears flicking. Goosekit turned and scrambled away, not sure why everyone was making a fuss. He crawled towards a den that smelled of plants and fresh things. Pushing his way inside, the tiny silver kit lifted one paw, eyes wide. ''Wow!'' He nuzzled through piles and piles of herbs, sniffling and pawing. He left a small mess of shredded leaves on the ground as he pounced at another pile. ''I found him!'' A voice called. Goosekit turned to see a she-cat with ginger fur, small white spots running down her body. ''Who are you?'' He mewled, tilting his head. ''I'm Bloomclaw.'' The she-cat looked at him thoughtfully. ''You're Goosekit, aren't you?'' Goosekit nodded, watching her with pale, clear eyes. ''Well get on out, I don't like having kits in my den. You could eat something poison.''
Goosekit leaped onto the rock, gazing around at the whole camp. ''I'm a goose! Honk honk!'' He yowled, his tiny voice ringing clearly in ShineClan's camp. The brown warrior padded towards him, eyes gleaming sadly. ''Acornfall!'' Goosekit had learned his name earlier that day. He darted over to him. ''Goosekit, there's something I have to tell you.'' Acornfall sat down in front of him. Goosekit gazed at him, wondering what he meant. ''Your mother... she's gone to.. she's gone to be with her kin.'' Acornfall didn't know how to put it to the young kit. Goosekit blinked in confusion. ''Without saying goodbye? Why did she go? When will she be coming back?'' A dark grey she-cat stalked up to them and flattened her ears in a hiss. ''She's not coming back, kittypet. She's dead!'' Acornfall glared at her. ''Shut up, Silentstorm! I would have told him in a more gentle way!''
Goosekit backed away, his ears flattened. ''What?'' Grief shook through him. ''No!'' He turned and scrambled away, his light eyes filled with tears. ''Never!'' The tiny kitten skidded to a stop at the foot of the medicine den. ''MOM! MOM COME BACK!'' The tiny kitten screamed, his paws shaking with terror. ''What's going on out here?'' Bloomclaw pushed her way out of the darkening den. Goosekit blinked away tears, staring at her through narrowed, tear-stained eyes. ''What...'' Bloomclaw glanced at Acornfall. ''I told you not to-'' Acornfall limped towards her. ''It was Silentstorm.'' He gave an angry flick of his tail at the silver coloured she-cat. Goosekit turned his back on them. Acornfall glanced pitifully at the kit. ''Silentstorm was too rough with him.''
Goosekit backed away. ''I don't want to talk to any of you!'' He hissed, fur bushed up in rage. Bloomclaw blinked at him in pity. ''I see. Let me look after him in my den for a while.'' Goosekit swiped at her, claws unsheathed. ''No!'' Bloomclaw curled her tail around him. ''Come on in.'' Goosekit followed reluctantly, mewling pitifully. Bloomclaw hooked a piece of bark in her paws. ''This is a-'' ''Alder Bark.'' Bloomclaw spun around, staring at him in shock. Goosekit also looked startled. ''You knew? Who told you?'' Goosekit flattened his ears, shuffling his paws. ''No-one did.'' Bloomclaw's mouth dropped open as she stared at the young kit in surprise.
''He can name basic herbs of the top of his head, and no-one ever told him!'' Bloomclaw hissed to the aging leader. The old tom cat, Howlingstar, blinked, his whiskers twitching. His deputy, a young a beautiful she-cat called Ambertail, glanced at Bloomclaw. ''Do you think this refers to the Splashing Twig?'' Howlingstar shook his head. ''No, it can't be. I saw a twig in a river. A StarClan cat whispered that with every Splash, the Herb upon the Twig Shines ever brighter.'' Howlingstar's grey whiskers twitched. ''It makes no sense, and why would it refer to Goosekit? He is after all, only a kit.'' Bloomclaw shook her head. ''You have to listen, Howlingstar, he-'' Howlingstar raised a paw. ''I have heard enough. Go to bed, Bloomclaw. You too, Ambertail. You need to rest.''
